Classical Ballet

Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Syllabus

Preschool ballet: first steps are with imagination engaged.

Traditional, formal ballet technique, known for its aesthetics and rigor, its flowing, precise movements, and its ethereal qualities.

The New England Dance Theatre works with the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) syllabus which is an internationally taught system of ballet based in the United Kingdom. Levels are assessed  from pre-primary (5+ years) onwards though there is also a pre-school program. The continuity between all levels is sophisticated and effective with options increasing after Grade 5.  Options include:

  • continuing with a graded recreational stream to level 8

  • vocational pathway to Solo Seal

  • a new program called 'Discovering Repertoire'.

Blended with our signature priorities of cross-training, conditioning, creativity, and dance-theatre our ballet classes are designed to evolve performance skills to a high level while enriching a student’s interaction with the art of dance for a life-time.

The syllabus levels available each year through NEDT are affected by enrolments at the beginning of the year and the preferences of continuing students (higher grades.)

Pre-school Ballet

Our Pre-school Ballet class provides a strong foundation for the learning of dance regardless of style. In the imaginative context of our themed classes natural momentums of physical development are maximised, with creativity and musicality.

See class timetable.

See 'Why Dance with Us' for information about our dance styles.

Contemporary / Jazz

Expressive, progressive dance classes

Two styles of Dance, Contemporary and Jazz, which invigorate each other are taught together in a flexible manner for an adaptive and spontaneous training environment.

FOUR CLASSES

There are 3 training levels in the current presentation, plus an Open class for more experienced dancers.

  1. Level One (8+ years)

  2. Level Two (10+ years)

  3. Level Three (14+ years)

  4. Open Contemporary-Jazz (14+ years/Adult/experienced)

Based on the age of students, level-appropriateness is also affected by an individual’s dance-experience registerable on the enrolment form.

All classes feature Contemporary and Jazz Movements trained together along with imagination stimulating principles of movement: impetus, momentum, resistance, falling with emphasis on either style according to immediate performance/assessment goals.

JAZZ-FUN (10-14 years, Recreational)

We are now offering a Jazz-based class for 10-14 year olds on Tuesdays (6.15-7.00pm) which is designed for students with relatively less time or inclination to commit to dance skill development. It will also act as a platform to spring from to the training stream (based on two ballet-related weekly classes) should dance become more important to the student.
